Founded in 1897 the Royal Automobile Club is the first organisation specifically formed to cater for the needs of the motorist at a time when the first motor cars were very unreliable. Since then the RAC has become a UK national institution with its own famous club in Pall Mall, London, England. The Club organises the annual London to Brighton veteran car rally which commemorates the abolition of the 'Man with red flag', which prior to the event was a legal requirement for car drivers on UK roads.
